Meet Iain Jeffery, Beauty Blogger And PHD Student

Iain Jeffery is not your average beauty blogger. When he’s not Vlogging a killer smoky eye tutorial (or reviewing his latest skin care obsession) then he’s spending every waking moment working on his PHD in Criminology. The impressive 25-year-old Melburnian also takes a studious approach to his skin care by diving into Swinburne University’s library of academic papers written on beauty. It’s safe to say that he knows his ingredients back to front and he’s here to tell us all about it! We asked him to reveal the routine that keeps his breakouts at bay, what a self-care night in looks like for him as well as his holiday plans now that travel is back on the cards.

ON HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH SKIN AND BEAUTY GROWING UP

“My mum is very Irish and very pale (somewhat like myself!) and has always drilled in the importance of sunscreen. She’s never had a very serious beauty routine: it was always about sunscreen in the day and moisturiser at night. She taught me that those two steps were the very minimum of what I needed to do to look after myself. She thinks that what I do now (my multi-step routine) is excessive!”

ON HOW HIS SKIN IS TRACKING AT THE MOMENT

“Really good at the moment. Controversially, I went off Tretinoin (a prescription-strength Retinol) recently which I had been using for two years and my skin was always just okay. I stopped using it three weeks ago with the intention of going back on to it. Yet, my skin has been really happy since! Now I’m focusing on the essentials: a really great cleanse, good barrier support and serums, constant exfoliation and LA CLINICA’s retinol products.”

ON HIS RETINOL STRATEGY

“In my late teens I went on antibiotics to target bad acne and then progressed onto prescription-strength Retinol to try and improve it again. Not many people know that it's a wonderful treatment for acne and breakouts. I always say; Retinol is the strict parent that will tell your toddler skin what to do when it’s having a tantrum! I find that it helps reset it back to normal. I’ve changed my strategy now: I’m going on the weaker Pure Retinol 0.5% in Luxurious Plant Oils and I’m in it for the long haul. It’s doing me wonders.”

ON HIS SKIN AND SELF CARE ROUTINE

“On an average self-care night, I’ll lock myself in the bathroom and start with a very thorough and gentle exfoliation. I love that instant look of improved clarity, brightness and smoothness. Then I’ll throw on a rich mask and while I’m marinating, I pour a glass of wine (usually a Pinot Grigio), light a candle and then I nerd out on YouTube and editorial content (Into The Gloss and Mamamia.com). After half an hour I’ll take my mask off and then marinate some more in a beautiful facial oil followed by eye cream and a thick moisturiser — at this point I’m looking like a thickly glazed donut and I’m living for it!”

ON HIS PLANS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

“I love this time of year and the best part will be flying home to see Mum in Queensland, I haven’t seen her since November 2019! The worst part is always finding something to gift the men in my life; my Dad and my partner. LC’s For The Guys Holiday Kit is the most fuss-free skin care set ever and is making it easy this year. There’s a great cleanser, Vitamin C oil, moisturiser and SPF  — they can’t screw it up! I think it’s important for guys to understand skin care and particularly how important it is to prep before shaving. You need to exfoliate that skin as well as soften it with oils and moisturisers to help with ingrown hairs and irritation.”

ON HIS SKIN CLARIFYING ROUTINE

Anti Ageing 3 Fruit Enzymes Exfoliating Scrub & Mask

“I love this on my self-care double cleanse nights. Creamy plus a tiny bit of grit. I focus my scrubbing on the persistent texture around my nose, forehead and chin. I naturally get quite oily down the T-zone and I’ve noticed that it’s increased since the weather’s warmed up.”

Pure Hyaluronic Acid Plus Serum Concentrate

“For me this is more of evening serum. It’s Squalane-based and full of Peptides (which are made to replenish) so I personally find it a little bit oilier and better to wear at night so my skin benefits from a slower absorption while I'm sleeping.”

Essentials Healing & Hydrating Serum

“This is my all-time favourite LA CLINICA product because whenever I put it on, I feel as though I’ve applied five separate serums that all do different things! I love that it has Skinasensyl (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-15) in it which soothes everything down. There are lots of HA’s and it doesn’t feel sticky. Plus, it has a full suite of B Vitamins so this one product covers loads of different skin issues. I also like to use this as a pre-shave treatment to soften my skin and it has so many anti-inflammatory ingredients it also stops razor burns.”

Caviar & Pearl Repair Eye Cream

“This is my day eye cream of choice because I find that it’s a little more emollient than others, and my concealer sits on it so smoothly. It’s been a life-changer. On days when I don’t need much under-eye coverage, I like to mix my thicker concealer in with this so that it transforms into a really smooth, fresh tinted moisturiser. That works so well.”

Sensitive Skin Soothing Protection Balm

“This is my ideal thicker moisturiser. A balm in a modern, luxurious way plus it smells so good. I love that it also has Rose Hip oil in there which provides a natural boost of Vitamin A.”

Age Reversal Vitamin C & Enzymes Rehydrating Treatment Mask

“This mask is so good. I love the combination of Enzymes and Vitamin C– it’s helping lift away areas of pigmentation as it lightens and brightens skin. What I like about it is that after about half an hour there’s not a huge amount to rinse off because it’s been absorbed into the skin already. My tip is to pop this on before a big event or whenever you want your skin to look really lit-from-within under makeup.”
