Physical vs Chemical Exfoliants

Last minute invite to an event? Need to get radiant, baby-soft, glowy skin with so little time to spare? Skincare can't perform miracles, but you can go for the next best thing:

Exfoliation my friend!

Exfoliation comes in two kinds: physical and chemical. Physical uses small particles to manually buff dead skin away, for example sugar, rice bran or beads. While chemical exfoliants use an acid to dissolve the glue-like substance holding the dead skin cells together. Both achieve the result of loosening and removing dead skin and debris to leave your skin refreshed and rejuvenated. Removing this dead layer of skin also helps your skin absorb your favourite skincare products better.

Physical exfoliants have been misunderstood in the past, carrying the unfortunate reputation of being too harsh and damaging the skin. This sweeping generalisation is a myth and they can actually be very beneficial and gentle if you choose the right ingredients and your application is correct. Particles such as fruit pits and nut shells = no. Scrubbing like sandpaper on wood = double no.

So if they’re both so good, which one to choose? Why not both?

The Resurfacing Micro Dermabrasion Facial Exfoliating Scrub combines the powers of both chemical and physical exfoliants in a gel format to deliver the best of both worlds. The two approaches actually complement each other if used correctly, leaving silky-soft, radiant skin.

Containing the chemical exfoliant of Glycolic acid which not only dramatically improves smoothness and radiance, helps reduce sun damaged skin, but also addresses rough and flaky patches, improves hydration, and diminishes the appearance of pigmentation. The addition of Vitamin C further helps brighten and glow.

If you prefer a little more kick in your exfoliant, the Anti Ageing 3 Fruit Enzymes Exfoliating Scrub & Mask might be for you. It works in a similar way to the Resurfacing Scrub with the enzymes dissolving away dead skin but features a cream format and also doubles as a mask. Simply leave it on for a few minutes enabling sufficient time for the enzymes to work on the skin This one hits a little harder than the Resurfacing Scrub so go easy, once a week is enough!

Now for the technique. Gentle, easy circles with your fingertips using minimal pressure. You’re not sanding skin off your face, let the chemicals do the work that the physical particles miss.

The best part? Results are fast, like next day fast. Ta Da, event ready!
