I’ve Had a Reaction to My Skincare — Now What?

You introduced a new skincare product expecting brighter, smoother, healthier-looking skin. But whomp whomp… instead, your skin now feels:

  • Red

  • Dry

  • Tight

  • Sensitive

  • Flaky

  • Irritated

  • Like even water burns a little

First things first: you haven’t “ruined” your skin. Secondly, this doesn't mean active skincare is not suitable for your skin. Thirdly, your skin is probably not purging.

More often than not, your skin barrier is simply overwhelmed and is asking for a reset.

What’s Actually Happening?

Some skincare ingredients, particularly active ingredients like Retinol, exfoliating acids, Vitamin C or strong acne treatments, work by increasing skin turnover or deeply targeting congestion and texture. When introduced too quickly, layered incorrectly or overused, they can disrupt the skin barrier. And once your barrier becomes compromised, skin tends to react to everything. Even products that normally feel gentle can suddenly sting or burn.

Irritation vs “Purging”

Not every reaction is purging.

A temporary increase in congestion can sometimes happen with active skincare, but persistent burning, redness, excessive peeling, sensitivity or tightness is usually irritation rather than a sign that your skin is “getting worse before it gets better.”

What To Do Next

1. Stop all active products (temporarily)

Give your skin a short break from stronger ingredients, including:

  • Retinol / Vitamin A

  • Exfoliating acids

  • Strong acne treatments

  • Potent Vitamin C serums

Do not re-introduce until your skin has settled.

2. Simplify your routine

This is not the moment for a complicated 10-step routine.

Think:

Cleanse → hydrate → moisturise → SPF

That’s it.

3. Focus on barrier support

Right now, your skin needs comfort more than correction. Look for ingredients that help support hydration and barrier function, such as:

  • Ceramides

  • Hyaluronic Acid

  • Oat Beta Glucan

  • Allantoin

  • Niacinamide

Skin that feels calm and supported generally recovers much faster than skin constantly being overloaded with actives.

4. Wear SPF daily

Daily SPF becomes even more important while your skin recovers as compromised, skin is often more vulnerable to environmental stress and sun exposure.

When Will My Skin Feel Normal Again?

In many cases, skin starts feeling calmer and more comfortable within several days once irritating products are removed. However, more compromised barriers can take longer. The important thing is resisting the urge to keep adding more products in an attempt to “fix” it faster.

Reintroducing Active Skincare

Once your skin feels calm again, active products can usually be reintroduced slowly and gradually.

A good rule:

  • one active at a time

  • lower frequency first

  • barrier support alongside it

  • consistency over intensity
